Floppy Disk Drives (Apple II)

Apple 3.5 Drive

A9M0106

Additional DescriptionMore Details

The Apple 3.5 Drive, A9M0106 (825-1304-A) is a floppy-disk drive that uses removable, 800k 3 1/2″ inch disks to store and retrieve data. This drive was introduced with the Apple IIGS, although it was marketed as universal and will also match the case of the Macintosh II series. The Macs always had an internal drive, and any external drive cannot be daisy-chained.

It will work on the //c Plus and the //e (with controller card) and any Macintosh with a floppy disk port. It features an eject button and a port for daisy-chaining additional drives on the Apple II.

All are clean and tested to read and write and have all their feet. Exterior condition varies from as Nice as it gets to Severely discolored or a cracked housing and everything in between. More information about coloring can be found here. I try to put drives in the most appropriate category as far as exterior condition, but as the photos show, it is very hard to judge with some. Engraving will be disregarded in favor of coloring unless it is large and prominent. If you are buying a drive along with a computer purchase, I will do my best to match the coloring.

***Photos are for illustration only***

Quantities are limited as there are many that still need repair.

Apple 3.5 Drive Port Cover

A9M0106

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Apple 815-0968-A. This rare port cover came standard on the Apple 3.5 Drive. Most Apple II owners removed it so they could daisy-chain their drives. As the Macintosh isn’t capable of chaining external drives, the owners most likely never noticed or removed it.

Apple 5.25 Drive

A9M0107

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Apple 5.25 Drive, A9M0107.

This is a floppy-disk drive that uses removable, 5.25-inch disks to store and retrieve data. You can use this 5.25 Drive with ANY Apple II in the Apple II family of computers.

Apple ][, Apple ][ Plus and Apple //e models require an Apple I/O or 5.25 Drive controller card (not included). Apple //c models and Apple IIGS have built-in floppy disk ports. Also used with the IIe card on the Macintosh.

This was the last 5.25 drive that Apple made. Features daisy chaining on the rear, gray feet and Platinum in color to match the Platinum Apple IIe and IIGS. It replaced the Unidisk Drive which is Beige in color.

All are clean and tested to read and write and have all their feet. Expect minor scuffs or scratches, these are almost 35 years old. Exterior condition varies from as Nice as it gets to Severely discolored or a cracked(broken) housing and everything in between. More information about coloring can be found here. I will try to put drives in the most appropriate category as far as exterior condition, but as the photos show, it is very hard to judge with some. Apple Disk Drive Cable Clamp

For the Disk II Drive

Apple 805-0115-B or C. Neatly clamps the Disk II Drive ribbon cable running from the interface card through a port on the IIe back panel to the drive. The other purpose is to provide RFI shielding and the gray ribbon cable has a specific area for use with the clamp. Note that the early drives have a multicolored ribbon cable and do NOT have the RFI tab on the cable.

Stock is limited, so available with purchase of a Disk II Drive only. All clamps come with the mounting screws. Mostly these are gold in color, but I have seen silver ones in both revisions.

Apple Disk II Drive

Apple’s First Disk drive!

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Apple Disk II Drive, Model A2M0003. Apple’s first drive, replacing the data cassette was introduced in 1978 and sold for $595. It was replaced by the Unidisk drive. The Disk II Drive requires a Disk II interface card and can be used in the Apple ][, the ][ Plus, //e and IIGS.

I have several of these drives in stock. All have been cleaned, repaired if needed, speed tested and adjusted if needed, tested to format, read and write. They have all their feet.

Most are in nice condition, but still may have a minor scratch or scuff. Not so nice drives may have numerous scratches, non removable stickers, marker, etc. Still fully functional but not as pretty. As these are painted cases to match the Apple II and II Plus, they don’t have the discoloration issues of the later plastic Unidisk and Apple 5.25 Drives.

Available are drives with no label, Drive 1 label and Drive 2 label. Because the users put the labels on, they sometimes ended up in different places (shown is the usual place of top left corner). I have even seen them placed over the Apple logo 🙁 If this is a concern for you, please contact me prior to purchase.

Select from the following:

A) Nice drive, no label

B) Nice drive, Drive 1

C) Nice drive, Drive 2 (will match label placement with Drive 1 if both are purchased)

D) Not so nice looking (may or may not have Drive labels)

Apple Duodisk Drive

Two Drives in one!

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Apple Duodisk, A9M0108. Introduced in 1984 slightly before the Unidisk, it contains two 5-1/4″ Unidisk drives mounted side by side in a beige enclosure. Designed to sit between the computer and monitor.

The Duodisk drive has a unique, removable cable that runs from the drive to a drive interface card – either the I/O Controller (Duodisk) Card or the 5.25 Drive Controller Card as it was later named.

This drive cannot be daisy chained as the interface card only supports 2 drives.

It can be used on the Apple II, II Plus, IIe or IIGS with a Controller Card. It can be used with the disk port on some IIGS’s, please do your own research.

Several available. They have all been cleaned and tested to format, read and write. Speed checked and adjusted if needed. They all have their feet.

Select from the following:

A) Duodisk in original box (pictured) with cable, Owner’s Manual, Packing List and Drive number labels. Will be shipped inside another box.

B) Duodisk with cable. These look like the one pictured – minus the box, and range slightly in coloring from Nice to Light which isn’t noticeable unless they are stacked together. Last one to go has some noticeable discoloration on the left side and perhaps on the front.

C) Duodisk without cable. Severe discoloration.

Apple IIc internal disk drive assy. Doors are beige or platinum to match the flavor of your IIc. The bezels were all snow white to match the IIc case, but most have varying degrees of discoloration, just like the cases. ***Photos are for illustration only and likely NOT the drive you will receive***

Note: There is a clip screwed to the side (seen in solo photo and right drive in second photo) that is used for grounding and support in the later keyboards. The early keyboard had a pcb tab that stuck out to sit in that slot in the disk drive shield and no clip. The drive assy you receive may or may not have this clip, but it can be purchased here.
